Theodore Roosevelt was 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909. He does not have a Presidential Library…yet.
The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library1 will rise in Medora, North Dakota.2 Medora is a tiny town (population 112 as of the 2010 census) located in western North Dakota, just south of the Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The town is one of the main entrances into the 70,000-acre park devoted to the 26th President of the United States.

Medora, North Dakota has been chosen as the ideal location to develop the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum due to the strong association with TR. It was in the Badlands that Roosevelt grieved and healed as he pursued the “strenuous life,” transforming himself from a frail and underweight city dweller into a larger-than-life character, as he is popularly remembered today. TR himself credited his time in the Badlands as one of the foundational experiences of his life.
Design Competition
In 2020 Designs for the Library were presented.4
The Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library will be designed by Snøhetta.5
More than a building, the 15th American Presidential Library will share T.R.’s legacy with future generations. In fact, the design of the Library:
“is a journey through a preserved landscape of diverse habitats, punctuated with small pavilions providing spaces for reflection and activity”.
With a gently sloping roof facing the northeast, the library of the future is further connected to its past. Moreover, it overlooks the National Park, the Little Missouri River valley, and the Elkhorn Ranch.6
Governor Doug Burgum announced that the Continental Resources Board Chairman Harold Hamm gave a $50 million gift to the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation.7

I loved visiting North Dakota and that national park (which seemed pretty sparsely visited). I hope the library is a big success there -- I like the idea of the location but hope people will come see it.
