It is nice to think that a writer has more statues than all the soldiers and politicians who are are memorialized by statues. And people don't seem inclined to tear them down. Perhaps that proves that art triumphs over politics in the long run--or maybe it's because no one wants to damage a dog.

I looked at a lot of statues and writers' statues aren't done much these days. I can't think of any writer who would get so much admiration today. I'd have thought there'd be more of Shakespeare, but no one really knows what he looked like. Yes, more writers and less politicians would help us all.
