The José Martà Memorial in Havana is higher, but MartÃ, a renowned poet, is perhaps more lauded as a Cuban national hero because of his role in the liberation of his country from Spain as much as for his writing. See Wikipedia category: Statues of writers. I counted only 4 women writers with statutes. I added one of Jane Austen, so now there are 5.
Ye’ll no catch ane o’ the servants ganging up that stair, puir frightened heathens that they are, for fear of bogles and brownies, and lang-nebbit things frae the neist warld. (Rob Roy)
It is nice to think that a writer has more statues than all the soldiers and politicians who are are memorialized by statues. And people don't seem inclined to tear them down. Perhaps that proves that art triumphs over politics in the long run--or maybe it's because no one wants to damage a dog.
