My sister's husband, and my best friend, was a ham radio operator most of his life. He caught the bug from his father, a scientist for Motorola. I could never understand the appeal, but he enjoyed it, which was all that mattered.

I caught bug from my father who was a radio airman in WWII.

As was mine. He attended flight school, and the week before graduation they noticed they had an imbalance of pilots and navigators, pulled him and several others out to become navigators. He had to spend a lot of time on the radio.

Every ship had to have many people who could repair and operate radios. Essential!
