The backstory of the manuscripts and the role of Aurel Stein was part of the Russian--English great game..the west lost of track of this during USSR times. I wonder if the British Museum under pressure to return.

That's another fascinating story. Has anyone ever written a book about these cavs and the role they have played in history? I'd love to hear more about it.

Actually there is an amazing amount but not that much about the library. However, Aurel Stein's collection at the British Museum covers it. This book--Whitfield, Roderick., Susan Whitfield, Neville Agnew, and Susan. Whitfield. Cave Temples of Mogao : Art and History on the Silk Road . Los Angeles: Getty Conservation Institute and the J. Getty Museum, 2000--might be a good overview. I don't know anyone who has visited the Caves, do you?

That was fabulous. I didn't know there is a recreation in LA. There are quite a few youtubes on the caves, but this one was concise and new to me.
