He was such a crazy guy and was found dead (suicide) in a river...I didn't want to make this too long but the book is worth reading.

I will admit my first reaction was "...how does one get *rejected* after an application to an organization such as ABBA?" This seems akin to rejection from the Austin, TX Ladies' Gardening Society. Presumably their standards are stringent.

Some think his rejection (as not having an excellent reputation) led him to the Audubon theft/hero action to establish his excellenceness. And it worked! He was later ABBA president.

Membership in the ABAA cannot be obtained simply by paying a fee or signing an agreement. Before being considered for membership, booksellers must prove that they are established, knowledgeable, and of excellent reputation. Prospective members must be sponsored by current members, and undergo a rigorous screening process. The average ABAA member has been in the antiquarian book business more than twenty years.

There are quite few stories of dishonorable book sellers. This is one of the most extreme but libraries are not as secure as they should be. The guys in the other Audubon heist tased a librarian--can you imagine? I have to so many stories and thank you for the encouragement. I never thought the real world would be interested.

I hate to be the one to tell you this, but your commentariat might not all be directly representative of "the real world." I, for one, exist in a zone extraneous to reality.

Thornton is the detective with multiple personality disorder (dissociative disorder). Alternates include Harold Stassen and Tippi Hedren. McConaughey is the nerdy art historian who falls in love with the Tippi Hendren personality.

Rare books are quite full of stories. Tippi's daughter married Don Johnson and Antonio Banderas and Steven Bauer.
