During Winter Storm Izzy which is pounding the East Coast of the United States today (January 16, 2022) I thought people might like to think about one part of the East Coast that isn’t under storm watch—Florida.
The Florida Maritime Heritage Trail is a collection of locations open to the public. The Trail is made up of six themes, Coastal Communities, Coastal Environments, Coastal Forts, Lighthouses, Historic Ports, and Historic Shipwrecks.
The Collections and Conservation Laboratory section of the Florida Bureau of Archaeological Research (BAR) is responsible for the preservation and curation of over 3.5 million objects, which have been recovered from state-owned or state-managed lands.
The Arthur Vining Davis Archives at Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, FL houses a unique collection of primary source documents on the coastal environment from the 1920s to the present. Mote’s extensive archival collections include over 800 linear feet of material representing an invaluable depiction of ecological, environmental, and socioeconomic conditions in coastal areas of southwestern Florida and the eastern United States.
Florida sounds like a good place to be during these stormy days. I hadn't realized that the East Coast storms had missed Florida. Out here in California, we have been on a tsunami watch. The tides at Ocean Beach were intimidating yesterday (Jan. 16, 2022) but now the warning has been lifted. I hope Tonga will be able to recover from its volcanic eruption.
