This week marks the 199th anniversary of the Ottoman attack on the Greek island of Chios in which nearly 100,000 were killed or enslaved. The library was destroyed and replenished with support from Adamantios Korais.
The painting by Eugène Delacroix, The Massacre of Chios (Le Massacre de Scio) aroused concern and sympathy and created political support for Greek independence.
Another painting by Delacroix, “Liberty leading the people” was banned on Facebook.
(Facebook apologized and restored it).
