A friend mentioned she was reading Irrational Man: A Study in Existential Philosophy (1958)— book by the philosopher William Barrett.
Over many years working in libraries, going to bookstores, helping with library donations I have seen this cover. It’s not easy to find this cover today.

Titles can't be copyrighted. (How could they?) But yeah, it seems obvious coming across this book inspired the movie.
