His Holiness Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio (December 17, 1936) is the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State.
The conclave elected Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ, Archbishop of Buenos Aires on March 13, 2013. He took the pontifical name Francis. He is the first pope from the Society of Jesus (the Jesuit Order), the first from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, and the first born or raised outside Europe since the 8th-century papacy of the Syrian pope Gregory III.
